Eastern Austrian authorities are continuing a large-scale search for two escaped bulls that prompted notable transportation disruptions Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The animals, weighing between 600 and 700 kilograms each, broke free from a slaughterhouse in Fürstenfeld, leading to road and rail closures as officials prioritize public safety. The search involves specialized units, including the Cobra special forces, and highlights the challenges of managing large animal escapes in both rural and potentially populated areas.

Behörde warnt

Authorities in eastern Austria are warning residents to exercise caution as a search continues for two escaped bulls that prompted road and rail closures Tuesday evening. The animals broke free while being unloaded at a slaughterhouse in Fürstenfeld.

The incident began around 7 p.m. Tuesday when the two bulls, each weighing between 600 and 700 kilograms (1,320 and 1,540 pounds), escaped from a slaughterhouse in Fürstenfeld. The animals initially headed toward the city center before moving onto several rural roads in the direction of Übersbach.

Nighttime Search Involves Drones and Specialized Police

A large-scale search operation, including the use of drones, was launched Tuesday night involving firefighters, police, and even members of the Cobra, Austria’s special forces unit. A veterinarian and representatives from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district administration also participated. Despite the extensive efforts, the animals were last sighted near the Fehringer Straße in a wooded area, and their trail went cold. The search was suspended around midnight due to weather conditions.

The search resumed early Wednesday morning, focusing on a wide area surrounding Fürstenfeld, particularly in forests and fields. Police spokesperson Fritz Grundnig said Cobra officers are again deploying drones alongside local hunters and a veterinarian. “It’s a very expansive area. They are probably somewhere in a meadow. I think they will graze,” Grundnig stated. As of midday Wednesday, the bulls remained missing.

Traffic Disruptions Reported

Authorities have implemented numerous road and rail closures, including sidewalks and bike paths, to prevent potential accidents. “If you suddenly encounter a 600 to 700-kilogram bull on the highway or federal road, a collision would certainly result in serious injuries,” officials warned.

Police are urging the public not to approach the animals if sighted. “Under no circumstances should you approach the animals. You don’t know how these animals will react. Please call the police emergency number 133, and we will proceed to capture them. If the animals pose an immediate danger, a firearm may be used,” authorities said. The ongoing search highlights the potential dangers posed by large animals escaping confinement.
