Kyiv – Russia launched a massive, overnight barrage of drone and missile attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, marking one of the most intense periods of aerial assault in the nearly 22-month-long war. The strikes, which impacted regions across the country including Odesa and Mykolaiv, have left over a million Ukrainians without power and raised concerns about the country’s ability too withstand continued attacks as winter looms. Ukrainian officials are working to assess the full extent of the damage and restore essential services following the widespread assault.
Russian forces launched widespread attacks across Ukraine overnight, targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, leaving more than a million people without power nationwide. At least seven people were reported injured in the strikes, which Ukrainian officials described as some of the most intense of the war.
Odesa region military administrator Oleh Kiper described the overnight assault as “one of the most massive” to hit the area. According to Kiper, two people were injured, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported four injuries overall. Damage was reported to civilian facilities, as well as energy and industrial infrastructure, Kiper said.
The attacks on Odesa caused widespread power outages, with all traction substations in the city losing electricity. Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa city military administration, said that tram and trolleybus service has been suspended. Lysak added that most of the city is also without heat and water.
The Mykolaiv region also sustained significant damage. Vitaliy Kim, head of the regional administration, reported that towns in the Bashchanka and Mykolaiv districts were left without electricity, and critical infrastructure and electric transport in the city of Mykolaiv were also affected. Five people were injured in the attacks, including a 43-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old girl, all of whom were hospitalized in stable condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched over 450 attack drones and 30 missiles of various types at Ukraine overnight. He said more than a dozen civilian facilities across the country were damaged, and people in the Kirovohrad, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions were left without power. The widespread nature of the attacks underscores Russia’s continued targeting of Ukraine’s infrastructure.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, said that more than one million subscribers were without electricity across the country. The outages are likely to disrupt daily life for many Ukrainians and could strain resources as winter approaches.
