Russia is attempting to compensate for the loss of Starlink satellite internet access by deploying alternative communication networks, according to a Ukrainian military commander.
The Starlink satellite communication system had provided Russian forces with the ability to effectively manage troops and drones, as well as maintain a comprehensive view of the battlefield.
Following the loss of access, Russia is seeking alternatives, Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade “Achilles,” told FREEДOM television channel.
“Currently, Russia is deploying Wi-Fi bridges, laying fiber optic lines, and installing LTE towers to restore command and control of its forces,” Fedorenko explained. “However, Ukraine is already working on alternative communication channels to protect its troops from similar threats in the future.”
He added that Russian forces are also pressuring Ukrainian citizens, particularly those with relatives held captive or living in occupied territories, to regain access to Starlink terminals. Fedorenko advises anyone approached in such a manner to contact the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
“They know how to deal with this and can turn the enemy’s capabilities against them,” Yuriy Fedorenko said.
Restrictions on Starlink Operation in Ukraine
After reports of Starlink satellite terminals being used on Russian drones, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense contacted SpaceX. Only officially registered terminals are now permitted to operate within Ukraine, including those used by private citizens.
Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense and a specialist in electronic warfare and communications, stated that Russia is attempting to develop communication systems from the stratosphere as a replacement for Starlink. Testing of stratospheric platforms capable of providing 5G NTN connectivity has already begun.
