Saban Predicts Tennessee Victory in Crucial College Football Playoff Matchup Against Oklahoma

A pivotal game with College Football Playoff implications unfolds today as Oklahoma travels to Tennessee, and legendary coach Nick Saban believes the Volunteers will emerge victorious.

Saban, speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, highlighted Tennessee’s potent offense, stating, “I really like Tennessee in this game. They have one of the leading offensive teams in the country when it comes to scoring points. They’re difficult to defend. They’ve got a good offensive line. They can run the ball.” He acknowledged Oklahoma’s strong defense but suggested it will be challenged by Tennessee’s offensive spread, particularly on the road. This contest could significantly impact the final rankings and selection process for the four-team playoff.

A key factor in Saban’s assessment is Oklahoma’s recent offensive struggles following quarterback John Mateer’s hand injury. “The issue for Oklahoma is, are they going to be able to score enough points in this game?” Saban questioned. “They’ve been struggling on offense a little bit since John Mateer came back from breaking his hand, which is, I mean, it’s understandable.” Prior to Mateer’s injury, Oklahoma averaged over 31 points per game, a figure that has dropped to just over 19 in the three games since his return. While Oklahoma boasts a top-five defense, Tennessee’s offense ranks second in the FBS in scoring, averaging nearly 46 points per game. However, Saban also noted Tennessee’s defensive vulnerabilities, saying, “I just think Tennessee is going to be hard to beat, relative to the points that they score. But Tennessee struggles on defense, too, so they’re going to have to outscore them.” For a deeper dive into team statistics, visit ESPN’s College Football Statistics page.

Officials have stated they will continue to monitor both teams’ performance as the season progresses, with the outcome of this game likely to have a lasting effect on their playoff hopes.
