Samsung SDI is reportedly developing a next-generation smartphone battery with a massive 20,000mAh capacity, potentially doubling the power available in current flagship devices. The pursuit of significantly longer battery life comes as consumers increasingly demand more from their smartphones, and as competitors explore similar high-capacity solutions. While still in the testing phase, the technology utilizes advanced silicon-carbon materials and a dual-cell configuration, though initial trials have revealed potential durability concerns. This development signals a possible strategic shift for Samsung, historically less focused on maximizing battery size than some other major manufacturers.

Samsung SDI is reportedly testing a large-capacity, dual-cell battery for smartphones, potentially offering significantly extended usage times. The battery, rumored to hold 20,000mAh, represents a substantial leap beyond current smartphone battery capacities and could address a key consumer pain point – battery life.

According to reports, the battery configuration combines a 12,000mAh cell with a thickness of 6.3mm and an 8,000mAh cell measuring 4mm thick, utilizing silicon-carbon technology. During testing, the battery reportedly achieved an impressive 27 hours of screen-on time and approximately 960 annual charge cycles.

However, the testing process wasn’t without issues. Reports indicate the battery experienced swelling shortly after testing concluded, raising concerns about its long-term durability. Specifically, the 8,000mAh cell reportedly increased in thickness from 4mm to 7.2mm.

Samsung has historically focused less on extremely high battery capacities in its smartphones compared to some Chinese manufacturers, with its latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, featuring a 5,000mAh battery. This move suggests a potential shift in strategy.

It’s important to note that this information originates from anonymous sources and remains unconfirmed. There is also speculation that Samsung SDI may be evaluating this battery technology for electric vehicles rather than smartphones.
