As Saudi Arabia continues to undergo rapid social and economic transformation, the role of women in public life is a focal point of change [[3]]. This story details the experience of a Saudi writer and Shura Council member who initially opted to publish her work anonymously, prioritizing familial approval over public recognition. Her journey reflects a broader negotiation between long-held cultural norms and the aspirations of Saudi women seeking greater visibility in national discourse, particularly as the Kingdom increasingly engages on the international stage [[1]].

A Saudi Arabian writer and member of the Shura Council initially used a pen name and avoided having her photo published with her articles, citing a desire to first gain her father’s approval.

The decision, made before recent societal shifts in the country, stemmed from a desire to balance personal ambition with cultural expectations, she explained.

The writer recounted being asked why she wrote under a pseudonym and didn’t include her picture with her published work. “I was writing in the readers’ mail section under a pen name, and I wanted to appear with my full identity,” she said. “But at the time, I only wanted the approval of one person – my father.”

She acknowledged understanding societal sensitivities but expressed a longing to be recognized publicly by her own name. Discussions with her father about the matter took place around 2016, before the period of increased openness currently underway in Saudi Arabia, and were challenging.

“I told my father that I wanted to appear on television,” she continued. “When I travel with the King or the Crown Prince, the state we visit requires that I appear officially, and it’s not right for the work to be fragmented.”

Her father then gave his consent, anticipating potential negative social reactions. “He told me, ‘If anyone speaks to you about it, tell them to speak to my father,’” she recalled.

The writer’s experience highlights the evolving dynamics between tradition and personal expression within Saudi society. Her story underscores the importance of familial support in navigating changing social norms.
