Thiès, Senegal, will be the focal point of celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of Senegal’s independence. The national newspaper, Le Soleil, will contribute to the festivities with an exhibition dedicated to the independence day parade, which has been relocated to Thiès this year at the direction of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The exhibition will showcase previously unseen photographs chronicling the history of Thiès, from before independence through the present day. According to the city’s mayor, Babacar Diop, the exhibition has been integrated into the official program of events.
Beyond the exhibition, Le Soleil is preparing a special magazine issue dedicated to the anniversary. A series of videos, already completed, will also highlight various facets of Thiès – its history, culture, economy, and the city’s significant railway system, among other topics. Teams have been dispatched to gather content for these projects.
The newspaper’s coverage strategy was presented to Mayor Diop by the director general of Le Soleil and his team in a recent meeting. This comprehensive coverage underscores the importance of Senegal’s independence day and the cultural significance of Thiès as the host city for this year’s celebrations.
