Senegal is investing in a new approach to youth employment, launching cooperatively-run event planning businesses in the historic city of Saint-Louis. The initiative aims to provide young people with sustainable economic opportunities and move them away from precarious, informal work.
The Senegalese government is actively implementing its national policy for social and solidarity economy, and recently established two productive social cooperatives (Cps) focused on event planning in Saint-Louis. The launch included the provision of necessary equipment to get the businesses operational.
Minister of Microfinance and Social and Solidarity Economy, Alioune Badara Dione, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting young people with decent employment. “The creation of event cooperatives is a political choice by the Senegalese state,” Dione said. “It aims to offer young people a credible alternative to precarity and the informal sector, through a collective framework of organization and democratic governance.” The initiative aligns with Senegal’s Vision 2050, prioritizing solidarity and resource sharing as key components of development.
Dione underscored the importance of collective intelligence in addressing economic and social challenges. “We believe that shared responsibility, transparency, and organized collaboration can become real engines of wealth creation and social cohesion,” he stated. Saint-Louis, known for its cultural heritage, history, and creativity, provides a favorable environment for the growth of the event sector, which holds significant potential for job creation and the promotion of local skills.

“The event sector presents a real opportunity to structure local practices and provide quality services adapted to the economic realities of the population,” Dione explained. The beneficiaries have been trained in cooperative governance principles and are now tasked with managing the equipment provided by the state.
“The equipment is collective capital. Its transparent and equitable management is crucial for the credibility and sustainability of the cooperatives,” Dione insisted. He reaffirmed the state’s ongoing support, but emphasized that the success of these cooperatives ultimately depends on the commitment of the cooperative members themselves.
“The success of this initiative will depend on your ability to work together, preserve the unity of the group, and prioritize the collective interest,” he concluded. This action reaffirms the government’s confidence in youth and cooperation as essential drivers of sustainable economic and social transformation.
