Servette FC supporters will be unable to attend Saturday’s match against FC Zürich as the Stade de Genève’s North Stand will be closed following what authorities have deemed “irresponsible” fan behavior during last weekend’s game against Sion. Geneva authorities have activated “Progresso” Level 3 protocols in response.
The decision comes after Servette fans set off pyrotechnics “in a coordinated and massive manner” during Saturday’s match against Sion, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Geneva Council of State. The actions “endangered the safety of spectators and those involved in the game.” This follows previous incidents, including the use of pyrotechnics at the Lausanne train station on February 15.
Geneva officials described the incident as “a violation of safety directives, match authorization conditions, and an open defiance of authorities.” the canton has activated Level 3 measures within the “Progresso” cascade model, designed to prevent violence in sports.
Servette FC had already been issued a Level 2 “Progresso” sanction for two matches following earlier disturbances and the use of pyrotechnics in Lausanne in mid-February. At that time, officials explicitly stated that any further use of pyrotechnics or violent behavior would result in “immediate structural sanctions.”
Fan Actions Prohibited
In addition to closing the supporters’ section, the cantonal police and the Department of Institutions and Digital (DIN) have immediately halted all ticket sales to prevent fans from relocating to other areas of the stadium. Coordinated fan actions both inside and outside the stadium are similarly prohibited.
Authorities will meticulously review surveillance footage to identify those who ignited the pyrotechnics. Level 2 “Progresso” measures – including systematic pat-downs and enhanced video surveillance – will remain in effect.
Carole-Anne Kast, the State Councillor in charge of security, condemned “the obstinacy of a minority of supporters who prioritize confrontation over the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Servette FC has been asked to identify weaknesses in its security arrangements and actively collaborate in identifying those responsible for the misconduct. The “Progresso” cascade model outlines further measures, including playing matches behind closed doors at Level 4, should further incidents occur. Any infractions will also be subject to prosecution and appropriate sanctions, the statement concluded.
