Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” has been named the greatest rock song of all time by Shortlist.com. The iconic track topped the publication’s recently updated list of the 40 best rock songs, a ranking that considers a song’s historical significance, enduring cultural impact, and overall quality.
The song, featured on Led Zeppelin’s fourth studio album – often referred to as Led Zeppelin IV – was released in November 1971 and has since sold over 20 million copies. It’s widely considered a defining moment in rock music history.
“Stairway to Heaven” was born from a songwriting retreat in 1970, when guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant spent time at a remote cottage in Wales following the band’s fifth American tour. Page reportedly recorded ideas on a cassette player, and the foundation for the song emerged from fragments of earlier compositions. The lyrics then developed as Page played chords and Plant wrote the words.
According to Page, the intention was for the song to build from a gentle acoustic guitar sound to a more intense arrangement. He also highlighted the leverage of recorders in the song’s introduction, which contributed to its unique character. “The composition was meant to change with every section and be quite complex to present live,” Page said.
The Shortlist.com ranking also includes other rock staples like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze,” and The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” The list, updated in January 2026, spans decades of rock history.
