Osrblie, Slovakia – The road to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo is sharpening as biathletes compete for coveted qualifying spots. At the IBU Cup in Osrblie this week, Slovakian Šimon Adamov delivered a standout performance, injecting intrigue into his nation’s Olympic team selection process. The IBU Cup circuit is frequently enough the primary qualification route for athletes representing countries outside of established biathlon powerhouses like Norway, France and Germany, making each race critical.
Slovak biathlete Šimon Adamov delivered a strong performance at the IBU Cup event in Osrblie, securing a crucial result in the race for Olympic qualification.
Adamov finished 14th in the 10km sprint, and importantly, surpassed key competitors in the standings for spots at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The IBU Cup serves as a vital pathway for athletes from nations outside the traditional biathlon powerhouses to earn Olympic berths.
The Slovakian athlete shot a perfect 10-for-10 on the range, despite posting the 58th-fastest ski time. He edged out Kazakhs Asset Djussenov and Nikita Akimov, as well as Japan’s Mikita Tachizaki, all of whom are vying for limited Olympic places.
Djussenov and Akimov finished within 10 seconds of Adamov. “I’m definitely happy with my shooting. I don’t shoot two zeros every day,” Adamov said. “My skiing wasn’t great; I struggled to draft behind anyone on the downhills, and they pulled away from me. I lost a lot of time to the leader, who had the same shooting performance as me. I would have liked to have been closer, but that’s how it is.”
Slovakia was battling for Olympic qualification through the secondary qualification system after not finishing in the top 20 nations in the previous World Cup season. This system allocates 12 Olympic spots, with a maximum of two per country. Adamov’s 14th-place finish propelled him to 11th in the standings, trailing only teammate Tomáš Sklenárik, who sits in 10th.
However, Slovakia’s Olympic team will ultimately be determined by the best three results from the current and previous World Cup seasons, currently favoring Jakub Borguľa.
The qualification battle will culminate at the World Cup in Ruhpolding. Adamov and Martin Matko will continue their pursuit of Olympic qualification at the Ruhpolding World Cup, with a potential internal showdown for a second Olympic spot in either Saturday’s sprint or Sunday’s pursuit race in Anterselve.
While theoretically possible to displace Borguľa, both Adamov and Matko would need to finish within the top 30, a challenging feat against the world’s best biathletes.
Italy’s Christoph Pircher won the sprint race with a clean shooting performance and the fastest ski time, finishing ahead of Austria’s Magnus Oberhauser and the Czech Republic’s Petr Hák. All three racers shot cleanly in the competition.
