Skoda is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with teh new Elroq,a compact SUV positioned as a value-oriented option for families. The Elroq, built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, aims to deliver a balance of practicality, technology, and driving dynamics-earning it a spot as a finalist for the 2026 European Car of the Year award. Our detailed test drive explores the Elroq’s range of configurations, interior features, and on-road performance.

Skoda is making a strong push into the electric vehicle market with its new Elroq model, positioning it as a competitively priced family EV within the Volkswagen Group. The company is touting the Elroq as offering a fresh take on existing technology, building upon its established MEB electric vehicle platform.

While the MEB platform is not new, Skoda emphasizes that the Elroq represents a distinct vehicle with its own unique characteristics. The Elroq will be available in a range of configurations, offering both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options, along with varying battery capacities to suit different needs and budgets.

The base models, the Elroq 50 and Limited 50, feature a 52 kilowatt-hour battery providing a WLTP-certified range of 375 kilometers (approximately 233 miles) and a 170 horsepower electric motor. Stepping up to the Elroq 60, eJoy 60, and SportLine 60 variants brings a larger 59 kWh battery and a more powerful 204 horsepower motor. For those seeking even greater performance, the Elroq 85 and its eJoy and SportLine trims boast an 82 kWh battery, a 286 horsepower motor, and all-wheel drive. A high-performance RS version, delivering 340 horsepower, is also available with all-wheel drive.

Agile Handling and Spacious Interior

Initial testing focused on the Sportline 85 model, equipped with the larger battery and a powerful rear motor, resulting in a vehicle weight exceeding 2.1 tons. Surprisingly, the Elroq exhibits a remarkably tight turning circle of just 9.8 meters, a benefit of the MEB platform’s short front overhang. This allows for exceptional maneuverability in tight spaces, aided by integrated cameras and parking sensors.

Despite its compact dimensions – 4.49 meters in length – the Elroq offers a surprisingly spacious interior. Skoda highlights that the Elroq surpasses its gasoline-powered counterpart, the Karoq, in terms of interior space, thanks to its shorter overhangs and a 2.77-meter wheelbase. Passengers are seated at a similar height to those in the Karoq, despite the underfloor battery pack.

Cargo space is slightly reduced compared to the Karoq, offering 470 liters versus 521 liters. However, Skoda has maximized usability with clever storage solutions, including a versatile cargo area divider that can also function as a shelf. A dedicated compartment is provided for the Type 2 charging cable, and additional storage options are integrated beneath the cargo floor.

The Elroq’s interior is well-appointed, featuring premium materials and a modern design aesthetic consistent with other electric vehicles in the Volkswagen Group. The cabin includes large door pockets, soft-touch surfaces, and leather-like trim on the dashboard. A soft armrest is positioned in front of the touchscreen, and high-quality plastics and carbon fiber accents contribute to the overall upscale feel.

The driver interface is relatively uncluttered, with Skoda incorporating augmented reality to project key data onto the windshield via a head-up display. The central touchscreen is responsive, offers excellent camera resolution, and features a clear menu structure, with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration – including wireless connectivity.

However, the integrated ChatGPT-powered voice assistant, “Laura,” requires a stable internet connection to respond to natural language queries. More importantly, the navigation system provides quick and accurate routing, even offline, including planning charging stops. The system offers detailed information on charging stations, arrival times, remaining range, and charging duration.

To expedite charging, the battery can be pre-conditioned through the navigation system, either automatically upon entering a destination or manually. The system displays the maximum charging rate achievable based on the Elroq’s current state. Charging progress can be monitored remotely via a smartphone app. An battery protection mode limits charging to 80% to extend battery life. While there isn’t a dedicated button to unlock the charging port, it can be released by double-pressing the remote key.

During testing, the Elroq 85 achieved a range of 333 kilometers (approximately 207 miles) on a single charge, with an average energy consumption of 25 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers. This figure was impacted by cold weather conditions during the test. In Eco mode and with a more conservative driving style, the Elroq is capable of reaching up to 418 kilometers (260 miles) on a single charge.

The tested Elroq, equipped with electrically adjustable and massaging seats, delivered a spirited but controlled driving experience. While the 210 kilowatt motor provides substantial torque – 545 Newton-meters – acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) takes 7 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 180 km/h (112 mph).

The Elroq prioritizes stability and comfort over outright performance. It exhibits neutral to slight understeer during cornering, with limited steering feedback. The electronic stability program (ESP) intervenes only at the limit, preventing excessive oversteer. Even in Sport mode or with the ESP deactivated, it’s difficult to induce significant oversteer.

Despite this, the Elroq handles well in slaloms and lane changes. The brakes are excellent, bringing the vehicle to a halt from 100 km/h in just 33.4 meters. However, the use of drum brakes on the rear wheels is a notable compromise. The optional adaptive dampers provide a comfortable ride, effectively absorbing road imperfections, although the 21-inch wheels can slightly diminish ride quality. The Elroq also excels in noise isolation, particularly at highway speeds.

The Skoda Elroq is a strong contender in the growing EV market, offering a compelling combination of practicality, comfort, and efficiency. The vehicle has earned a place as a finalist for the 2026 Car of the Year award, competing against models such as the Citroën C5 Aircross, Kia EV4, Dacia Bigster, Fiat Grande Panda, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and the Renault 4. The winner will be announced on January 9th.
