Following a period of internal adjustments and consumer product refocusing, Sonos is unveiling the Amp Multi, a new amplifier aimed at expanding the company’s reach within the high-fidelity audio market. The launch represents a strategic move for Sonos, which experienced challenges with app updates and a CEO transition in recent years, but saw a positive response to its late-2024 Arc Ultra soundbar. This new product seeks to integrate existing traditional speaker setups into the Sonos ecosystem, offering a more powerful and customizable audio experience for dedicated enthusiasts and builds on the foundation of the existing $799 Amp.
Sonos is expanding its audio ecosystem with the introduction of the Amp Multi, a new amplifier designed to integrate traditional speakers into the company’s wireless system. The launch marks a return to new product releases for Sonos following a period of internal restructuring and app-related challenges.
The Amp Multi targets audiophiles and users with existing professional audio setups, offering a more robust solution than Sonos’s standard Amp. This move signals a strategic focus on deepening engagement with its current customer base rather than aggressively pursuing new users, the company indicated.
Sonos AMP Multi
Designed for those seeking a richer audio experience, the Amp Multi boasts four configurable zones and eight amplified outputs, delivering up to 125 watts per channel – a significant upgrade over the standard Sonos Amp. Each output can support up to three Sonos speakers. Notably, the Amp Multi lacks an HDMI port, meaning users will still need a soundbar or the standard Amp to connect to their televisions.
Sonos’s vision is to create a “coherent and radically simple system” by enabling users to incorporate “every dimension of sound.” The company’s strategy reflects a shift towards solidifying its position within the premium audio market, building on the foundation of its existing ecosystem.
The launch comes after a turbulent period for Sonos, including significant backlash over changes to its app and the departure of CEO Patrick Spence. However, the company’s most recent product, the Arc Ultra soundbar released in late 2024, was well-received by critics and consumers. This positive reception likely informed the company’s renewed product development efforts.
Sonos has indicated that additional products are planned for release in the second half of the year. Pricing for the Amp Multi has not yet been announced, as the product will be sold through professional installers via custom quotes. The standard Sonos Amp currently retails for 799 euros.
