Sony Ends PC Game Ports: PlayStation Returns to Exclusivity

After six years of increasingly ambitious efforts to expand into the personal computer market, Sony Group Corp. Is dramatically reversing course.

According to sources familiar with the company’s plans, the Japanese tech giant intends to discontinue releasing its major single-player titles on PC, returning to a strategy of strict console exclusivity.

This represents a significant shift in strategy, meaning PC gamers can likely rule out official ports of titles like last year’s hit Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming action game Saros. Both titles will now remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5.

While, the new policy will not apply to all projects. Sony intends to maintain multiplatform support for games focused on network play, such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon. This suggests PlayStation aims to clearly differentiate its premium narrative experiences from “live service” style titles. The move underscores the ongoing importance of platform ecosystems in the gaming industry.

Interestingly, despite the overall retreat from PC, publishing plans for games developed by external studios (but published by Sony) remain unchanged – Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora are still slated to debut on computers this year.

Several key factors are driving this decision, including unsatisfactory sales of some recent ports on Steam and the Epic Games Store. A growing faction within PlayStation also fears that wider availability of games on other platforms weakens the console brand and negatively impacts hardware sales.

Decision-makers apparently concluded that protecting the PlayStation ecosystem and promoting future generations of devices is more important than additional revenue from the PC market. In recent weeks, work on ports of Ghost of Yotei and other internal productions has reportedly been officially abandoned.

While the video game industry is often unpredictable and sources note that Sony’s plans could still be modified in the future, the company’s current signal is clear: PlayStation is returning to its roots. For fans of the brand, this represents a return to a time when powerful narrative experiences were a key argument for purchasing a specific console.
