Apple on Wednesday unveiled the MacBook Neo, a new laptop designed to offer a more affordable entry point into the Mac ecosystem. Starting at $599, it marks the most affordable MacBook in over a decade, with a particular focus on students and first-time users. The launch represents a strategic shift as Apple aims to compete more directly with Chromebooks and lower-priced Windows PCs, which have a strong presence in the education sector.

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch display and a lightweight metal chassis available in several vibrant colors. Unlike other laptops in the brand’s lineup equipped with M-series chips, it integrates the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro, helping to reduce costs whereas still delivering up to 16 hours of battery life, according to Apple. Pre-orders begin today, with availability slated for March 11.

This launch comes amid a slowdown in Mac activity, with revenue declining nearly 7% to $8.39 billion during the holiday quarter. Simultaneously, Apple has raised prices on its other models, with the MacBook Air now starting at $1,099 and a 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M5 Max chip priced at $3,899. The company is seeking to broaden its user base while strengthening the integration of Apple Intelligence across its entire range.
