LONDON – Sophie Kinsella, the author of the hugely popular “Shopaholic” series, has died at the age of 55. Kinsella, who also published under her birth name Madeleine Wickham, revealed in April 2024 that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, according to the Associated Press.
Her family announced her death on the author’s Instagram account. “She passed away peacefully, her final days surrounded by her beloved family, listening to music, feeling the warmth of their love, enjoying the Christmas lights, and experiencing the joy of life,” the family stated in the post. “We are utterly heartbroken and cannot imagine life without her infectious laughter and boundless love for life.”
Kinsella explained her delay in publicly disclosing her illness was to allow her children to process the news privately and adjust to “a new reality.”
Kinsella first gained prominence in 2000 with the publication of “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic,” a novel centered on a financial journalist with a severe spending problem. She went on to write ten novels in the “Shopaholic” series, as well as other popular titles including “Can You Keep a Secret?” and “Confessions of a Domestic Goddess.” Her books have collectively sold over 45 million copies worldwide and have been translated into numerous languages, demonstrating a broad international readership.
The first two books in the “Shopaholic” series were adapted into the 2009 film “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” starring Isla Fisher. The film adaptation broadened the reach of Kinsella’s work to a wider audience.
