Following a accomplished messaging feature launch last year, this update brings a key functionality previously limited to desktop and web versions to mobile devices, alongside new collaborative listening tools.

Spotify is rolling out new features designed to enhance the listening experience for its users. The streaming music app has evolved beyond simple playback, becoming a platform for music discovery and social connection. The company recently announced a long-awaited addition: the ability to see what your friends are listening to directly within the app. This feature underscores the growing trend of social integration within music streaming services, aiming to foster a more connected and shared listening experience.

The update, announced on X, builds upon Spotify’s existing messaging functionality, which launched last summer. Since then, the company reports that over 40 million users have exchanged nearly 340 million messages. While the messaging feature proved popular, it initially lacked the ability to see real-time listening activity.

Previously, users could only view friends’ listening activity through the web version or desktop app. Now, Spotify is bringing that functionality to mobile devices, addressing a frequently requested feature. The update to Messages includes this capability, along with other enhancements.

How to See What Your Friends Are Listening to on the Spotify App

The ability to see friends’ listening activity within the app has some limitations. Users will only be able to see what contacts they’ve actively messaged are currently listening to. If a friend is inactive, the app will display the last song they played. Users also have the option to disable activity sharing in the app’s settings.

In addition to real-time listening updates, Spotify has added a “Request to Jam” button within the Messages section. This feature allows users to initiate a collaborative listening session and add songs for both to enjoy. The “Jam” feature supports multiple participants, but the session host retains control over accepting or rejecting requests. This builds on Spotify’s previous improvements to its collaborative listening features, as seen in its Android Auto integration.

Spotify confirmed that the update is now available on both iOS and Android devices. Users can access the new features by updating to the latest version of the app. Some features may require a Spotify Premium subscription.
