Star Chaux-de-Fonds secured a thrilling victory over Moutier on Saturday night, prevailing in overtime after a 2-2 tie to win their group final 3-1. The win sends Star Chaux-de-Fonds into the Romandy final, continuing a remarkable run for the team.
The atmosphere at Les Mélèzes was electric, with a larger-than-usual crowd witnessing a back-and-forth contest. Moutier equalized with just three minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. However, the drama wasn’t over. Johann Duplan set up Loïc Pécaut for the game-winning goal, sparking a jubilant celebration on the ice as players mobbed each other.
“It was a lovely moment to experience, like a release for me,” said coach Michael Neininger, reflecting on the emotional victory. The former HCC captain, who had previously been unable to secure a championship as a player, finally achieved the feat from the bench. He took a moment of quiet reflection behind the team bench to savor the win before joining the players in celebration.
The victory came at a cost, however, as forward Théo Rais was forced to leave the game by ambulance. Fortunately, initial reports indicate he suffered a pulmonary edema and will be sidelined for three weeks, ruling him out of the Romandy final.
Neininger praised his team’s resilience, particularly considering their grueling schedule. “I was especially happy for my guys who really gave everything to get this win despite the accumulated fatigue.” Since February 8th, Star Chaux-de-Fonds has played nine games in just 21 days, a demanding stretch for players who largely work full-time jobs in addition to hockey. The demanding schedule has taken a toll, with several players sustaining injuries throughout the playoffs.
The team’s success has been built on collective effort and impactful play. Several players stepped up throughout the series, including Robin Fuchs, Loïc Pécaut, Vivian Pelletier, Leo Stengel, David Bozzo, Johann Duplan, and Esteban Willemin. Willemin, in particular, has been in outstanding form, scoring twice in each of the last two games after missing a penalty in the previous match.
Star Chaux-de-Fonds will now face Bulle in the Romandy final, beginning this Friday, March 6th at 8:30 PM (local time) in Bulle. The series will continue on Sunday, March 8th at Les Mélèzes at 3:30 PM. A third game, if necessary, will be played on Wednesday, March 11th in Bulle at 8:30 PM.
Neininger admitted he doesn’t recognize Bulle well but has gathered information from former HCC teammate Michaël Bochatay, who has faced them with Villars. Despite potential success, the club has indicated it would decline a promotion to the next league, preferring to focus on continued development within the 2nd league.
