Stellantis-Backed ACC Scraps Italian, German Gigafactory Plans

Automotive giant Stellantis’ battery joint venture, ACC, has abandoned plans for gigafactories in both Italy and Germany, according to recent reports. The decision comes as the company reassesses its strategy in response to evolving market conditions.

The project in Termoli, Italy, is “definitely giving up,” as reported by Reuters on November 14, 2025. ACC, in which Stellantis is the largest investor, originally envisioned three gigafactories across Europe – in France, Germany, and Italy – to bolster its battery production capacity. The cancellation of the German facility was also confirmed.

The move follows concerns raised by unions regarding the future of the Termoli plant. Italian unions are now seeking guarantees regarding employment and production at the site, with Stellantis assuring continued investment and activity in the area. First Online reported on the union’s concerns and Stellantis’ response.

ACC’s decision to halt the projects reflects a broader trend of reassessment within the electric vehicle battery sector, as companies navigate challenges related to demand, supply chains, and geopolitical factors. U.S. News & World Report detailed the shift on February 7, 2026.

While the gigafactory projects are off the table, Stellantis has indicated its commitment to maintaining operations and exploring alternative investments in Termoli, focusing on mechanical work and the development of recent transmissions, according to ansa.it. This decision underscores the dynamic nature of the automotive industry and the ongoing adjustments companies are making to adapt to the evolving landscape of electric vehicle production.
