The Stellantis Mangualde plant in Portugal produces 91% of the country’s light commercial vehicles, a segment where internal combustion engines remain critical and decarbonization efforts are particularly challenging.
These vehicles are ubiquitous, utilized by domestic delivery services and large corporations alike. They require substantial range and payload capacity, and are vital to the Portuguese economy, yet continue to rely on gasoline and diesel power.
Whereas internal combustion engines currently dominate this vehicle category, European regulations are creating headwinds for light commercial vehicle manufacturers.
These challenges include potential fines starting in 2027 for automakers failing to meet decarbonization targets, as well as the planned phase-out of internal combustion engine vehicles in the European Union by 2035.
