MOTOR & INFRASTRUKTUR
As the switch to summer tires approaches on April 1st, consumers are advised to carefully review testing data before making a purchase. A recent assessment by M Sverige reveals significant performance differences between tire brands, with lower-priced options potentially posing safety risks and long-term costs.
The comprehensive test, detailed in the latest issue of the Motor magazine, evaluated 16 summer tires in the common size 225/50 R17. Findings indicate that a higher price tag doesn’t always guarantee superior performance, but opting for lesser-known brands often involves compromising on safety. The tire market is highly competitive, and informed purchasing decisions are crucial for vehicle safety and longevity.
“Don’t purchase tires from a brand you’ve never heard of or can’t find independent test results for,” warns Carl-Erik Stjernvall, technical expert at M Sverige in a press release.
Safety and Longevity are Key Considerations
Three tire models stood out in this year’s testing. The Continental PremiumContact 7 earned the top spot, demonstrating impressively short braking distances and strong stability. The Pirelli Cinturato (C3) secured second place, praised for its consistent performance and extended lifespan. Rounding out the top three is the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2, recognized as the longest-lasting tire in the test.
Tire longevity represents a significant opportunity for cost savings.
“Choosing tires that last longer can save consumers considerable money. Repeatedly replacing inexpensive tires due to faster wear ultimately costs more in the long run,” says Carl-Erik Stjernvall.
Wet Weather Reveals Performance Gaps
The performance disparities develop into most critical in wet conditions. Tires at the bottom of the rankings exhibited noticeably reduced grip and stability during rainy weather and emergency maneuvers. Brands like Lassa, Leao and Linglong were among those with the lowest scores.

Expert Recommendations for Tire Purchases:
- Consider the Whole Picture: Don’t focus solely on price. Factor in safety, tire lifespan, and fuel efficiency.
- Check Tread Depth: While the legal minimum is 1.6 mm, experts recommend at least 3 mm to maintain grip in wet conditions.
- Consult Test Results: Review independent tire tests (like this one) before making a decision.
