As Warner Bros. Revelation navigates its first full slate of films under new ownership by Netflix, the highly anticipated Supergirl film is poised to take a markedly different tone than previous DC adaptations. The first trailer for the June 24, 2026 release has dropped, offering a glimpse of a Kara Zor-El portrayed by Milly Alcock grappling with a darker, more complex journey inspired by Tom King’s Supergirl: woman of Tomorrow comic run. Directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira, the film features a returning jason Momoa as Lobo and signals a shift in the DC Universe’s storytelling approach.
One of 2026’s most anticipated films is set to soar – and it’s taking a decidedly different path than its famous cousin. SUPERGIRL will venture out on her own next summer, and the newly released trailer signals a bold new direction for the DC Universe.
A Shift in Tone for the DCU
As the recent acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix continues to dominate headlines, the studio is doubling down on its blockbuster slate for 2026. All eyes are now on a June 24, 2026 release date, when SUPERGIRL is expected to shine just as brightly as SUPERMAN (which grossed $616 million worldwide).
James Gunn remains the driving force behind the DCU alongside Peter Safran, but the film will be directed by Craig Gillespie, known for his work on I, TONYA. The screenplay is penned by Ana Nogueira, marking her feature film debut. This creative team promises a cinematic experience distinct from Gunn’s vision for SUPERMAN, and the trailer confirms that shift.
The teaser released earlier this week hinted at the change. Unlike the optimistic portrayal of Clark Kent, Milly Alcock (HOUSE OF THE DRAGON) embodies a more disillusioned Kara Zor-El. The trailer showcases this world-weariness, echoing her brief appearance in SUPERMAN.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW
The film appears to draw heavily from Tom King’s comic book SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW, which served as the primary inspiration for the project – and was originally its working title. The storyline follows a vengeful, interstellar manhunt, presenting a Kara who is more melancholic and reserved than her cousin. Unlike Superman, she carries the weight of Krypton’s memories and the loss of her family, explaining her desire to “celebrate” her birthday under a red sun, stripped of her powers.
Alongside Krypto, her canine companion, Kara will cross paths with Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a young woman determined to find Krem of the Ochre Dunes (Matthias Schoenaerts), the film’s main villain. A notable addition to the film, deviating from the source material, is Jason Momoa. The former Aquaman reprises his role as the alien mercenary Lobo, a character he’s long expressed affection for. The trailer doesn’t reveal whether Lobo will be an ally or adversary to Supergirl, but he’s sure to bring chaos to the screen.
SUPERGIRL arrives in theaters June 24, 2026. The trailer’s release is accompanied by the debut of the film’s first poster, featuring a Kara who still radiates a spark of joy. The film is poised to be a significant entry in the evolving DC Universe, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved character.
