Sweden is set to experience an unusually warm start to May, with temperatures soaring to summer-like highs just in time for the country’s extended holiday weekend. Forecasters say parts of southern and central Sweden could hit 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) by Friday, marking the first true taste of summer heat for 2026.

The warm spell coincides with Walpurgis Night (Valborgsmässoafton) on April 30 and May Day celebrations, giving Swedes a rare opportunity to enjoy outdoor festivities under near-perfect conditions. Meteorologists say the timing couldn’t be better for those planning to take advantage of the long weekend.

Heat Builds Through the Week

According to meteorologists, a high-pressure system moving in from Europe will bring clear skies and steadily rising temperatures across much of the country. While Monday saw highs of around 59 degrees (15°C) in southern regions like Skåne, forecasters predict a daily increase in warmth as the week progresses.

By Thursday—Walpurgis Night—temperatures are expected to climb above 68 degrees (20°C) in large parts of Götaland and Svealand, with some areas in Småland, Blekinge, and the Mälardalen region potentially reaching even higher. Northern Sweden won’t be left out entirely, with coastal areas along Norrland forecast to see highs between 59 and 68 degrees (15-20°C).

“It’s shaping up to be one of the warmest Walpurgis Nights in years,” said Lasse Rydqvist, a meteorologist at Klart. “We’re looking at stable, mild conditions almost nationwide, with just a few clouds and possible showers in the far north.”

Peak Heat on May 1

The warmest day of the stretch is expected to be Friday, May 1, when temperatures could reach 77 degrees (25°C) in parts of eastern Götaland. Meteorologists describe the conditions as “high summer heat,” a term typically reserved for mid-summer temperatures in Sweden.

“What we have is the first real day this year where we could see true summer-like warmth,” Rydqvist said. “The combination of warm air flowing in from Europe and plenty of sunshine is pushing temperatures up quickly.”

Viktor Bergman, a meteorologist at Sweden’s national weather agency SMHI, echoed the forecast, noting that the heat will be most pronounced in the southern half of the country. “We could see 75 degrees (24°C) or higher in many areas, with eastern Götaland having the best chance of hitting 77 degrees (25°C),” he said.

Enjoy It While It Lasts

The warm weather won’t stick around for long. Forecasters say clouds will begin moving in from the west as early as Saturday, bringing cooler air with them. By Sunday, temperatures in southern Sweden will remain mild but will feel noticeably cooler without the sun’s direct heat.

“The sun is everything this time of year,” Rydqvist explained. “When it disappears, we lose heat swift. So while the weekend starts strong, it won’t last.”

For now, Swedes are making the most of the forecast. Many are already planning outdoor gatherings, bonfires, and picnics for Walpurgis Night—a traditional celebration marking the arrival of spring. With the holiday falling on a Thursday this year, followed by a public holiday on Friday, the warm weather offers an ideal backdrop for extended festivities.

“It really lines up perfectly with the long weekend,” Rydqvist said. “We’re looking at some of the best early-season weather in recent memory.”
