Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities came under a barrage of Russian drone and missile fire overnight, marking a critically important escalation in fighting as the conflict nears its third year [[1]]. At least two people where killed and 15 injured in Kyiv alone, according to city officials [[2]], as Russia seemingly disregards renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution [[3]]. The attacks prompted air defense responses from neighboring Moldova and Poland, underscoring the regional security risks posed by the ongoing war.
A recent large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine underscores the Kremlin’s apparent disinterest in pursuing peace negotiations, according to Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard. The statement comes as Kyiv and much of the country were under air raid alerts following a barrage of drones and ballistic missiles.
Malmer Stenergard addressed the situation on X, formerly known as Twitter, emphasizing the need for increased international support for Ukraine. “Obviously, Russia does not want peace,” she wrote. “Countries of the world that still believe in a rules-based world order must immediately strengthen support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.”
The attack resulted in damage to residential buildings in several areas of Kyiv, with reports of casualties. According to early reports, both drones and ballistic missiles were used in the assault.
Neighboring Moldova temporarily closed its airspace due to the intrusion of drones. Poland also responded to the escalating situation by deploying its air force and activating its ground-based air defense systems, bringing them to full combat readiness, .
The coordinated response from regional allies highlights the growing concern over Russia’s continued aggression and the potential for wider regional instability. The attacks are likely to further galvanize international efforts to aid Ukraine and hold Russia accountable.
