The Nintendo Switch 2, released in June of last year, is approaching its one-year anniversary and has seen impressive sales, particularly in Japan. Still, some observers have noted a reliance on ports of existing titles rather than a wealth of exclusive games.
But does this perception hold up under scrutiny? GameRant reports that the Switch 2 actually boasts more exclusive titles than both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series S/X combined. As of February 26th, the Switch 2 had a total of eleven exclusive titles after less than a year on the market, compared to nine for the PlayStation 5 after five and a half years, and zero for the Xbox Series S/X over the same period.
GameRant defines exclusive games as those available on only one platform, disqualifying titles too available on PC. The analysis also excludes PlayStation VR2 titles (Synapse and Horizon Call of the Mountain) due to the requirement of additional, console-priced hardware. This distinction is important as it focuses on the core console gaming experience.
GameRant also calculated a Metacritic average score for the exclusive titles, revealing that Nintendo’s games also achieve higher ratings. This data point is likely to spark debate, as the definition of “exclusivity” – excluding PC versions – and the balance between quantity and quality are often points of contention among gamers.
Regardless, the findings present an fascinating perspective on the console landscape. The comparison challenges conventional wisdom about exclusive content and raises questions about how to best measure a console’s gaming library.
