A dispute over venue location for the upcoming T20 World Cup has emerged, as Bangladesh sought to relocate its matches away from India citing security concerns. The Bangladesh Cricket Board requested a group swap with Ireland, proposing to shift Ireland’s matches from Sri Lanka to the Indian subcontinent, a request which was swiftly denied by both Ireland Cricket and the International Cricket council [[2]]. This standoff follows recent tensions stemming from the exclusion of Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League and a subsequent broadcast ban of the IPL in Bangladesh.

Ireland Stands Firm as Bangladesh Requests Venue Change for T20 World Cup

Dublin: Ireland’s cricket board has rejected a request from Bangladesh to be moved from Group B of the T20 World Cup, a move that would have seen them swap places with Ireland. Bangladesh cited security concerns as the reason for wanting to avoid playing matches in India, proposing that all of Ireland’s Group B games – currently scheduled for Sri Lanka – be shifted to the subcontinent.

The request came as a last-ditch effort to avoid playing in India, where Bangladesh is slated to play its Group Stage matches in Kolkata and Mumbai. However, an Ireland Cricket Board representative confirmed that the proposal was turned down, stating that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has assured them there will be no changes to the groups or match schedule. Currently, Ireland is grouped with Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Oman in Group B. Group C features Bangladesh alongside Nepal, England, West Indies, and Italy.

The request was made during a meeting between ICC representatives Gaurav Saxena and Andrew E. Gray and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Both the ICC and Ireland have now formally rejected the proposal, leaving Bangladesh’s next move uncertain. The situation has unfolded against a backdrop of strained relations between the two countries.

The dispute stems from a decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to prevent Bangladesh pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman from participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In response, the Bangladesh government banned the broadcast of the IPL within the country. Following this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board approached the ICC seeking a venue change for their T20 World Cup matches, citing security concerns.
