Taiwan Braces for Dramatic Temperature Swings and Heavy Rainfall

Taiwan is experiencing a period of volatile weather, with temperatures plummeting to recent lows and significant rainfall impacting several counties and cities. The rapid shifts in temperature and localized downpours are creating challenging conditions across the island.

A cold air mass arrived on November 18, driving temperatures down to 12.4 degrees Celsius (54.3 degrees Fahrenheit) in the early morning, marking a new low for the season. Forecasters predict another cold front will arrive later today, bringing further temperature drops.

Four counties and cities are currently under a heavy rain alert, with Taipei experiencing localized flooding. A recurring area prone to water accumulation, dubbed “the hole that doesn’t rain in,” has once again filled with water, according to reports. Meteorologist Cheng Ming-tien explained the phenomenon is due to specific topographical and drainage conditions.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to dip to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) in the coming days. Another wave of northeasterly winds is forecast to arrive next week, continuing the pattern of fluctuating weather conditions. The unpredictable weather underscores the challenges of seasonal transitions in the region.

The Public Broadcasting Service (PTS) is providing weather updates with sign language interpretation, highlighting the importance of accessible information during severe weather events. You can find their latest report here.

The current weather pattern is characterized by significant temperature swings, with warm periods followed by sharp drops. This “roller coaster” effect is expected to continue throughout the week, requiring residents to prepare for a wide range of conditions.
