The Estonian railway company, Elron, has been working towards establishing this route for several years. Originally slated to launch in 2024, the project faced delays before being rescheduled.
Märts Ērenpreiss, a member of Elron’s board and its technical director, stated that December 15 is a realistic target date. He emphasized that all necessary preparatory work is nearing completion and that collaboration with the Latvian side is progressing smoothly.
The train will make five stops within Latvian territory – four between Tartu and Riga, and one at the final destination. On the Estonian side, the route will follow the existing line to Valga, where the train will cross the border.
To ensure smooth operations, Elron is already adjusting its domestic schedules. While final approval from European authorities is still pending, one two-car train with a crew is currently prepared for service.
Full operation of the express train will require at least three trains with adequate staffing, and remaining approvals are expected in the coming weeks.
According to current plans, the express train will depart Tallinn around 3:00 p.m., arrive in Tartu at 5:30 p.m., and reach Riga around 9:15 p.m. The return journey will depart Riga at 7:30 a.m., arrive in Tartu around 11:00 a.m., and continue to Tallinn.
The final timetable will be confirmed once railway infrastructure work is completed on both sides of the border. Ticket prices have not yet been announced.
Elron plans to include printed materials and digital advertising campaigns on board the trains to attract passengers.
