Taylor Fritz Names His Mount Rushmore of Men’s Tennis
World number four Taylor Fritz has selected Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Pete Sampras as the four greatest men’s tennis players of all time, sparking renewed debate among fans and analysts.
When asked for his picks, Fritz was decisive, stating, “Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Sampras. That’s it. That’s the Mount Rushmore.” He explained his inclusion of Sampras, emphasizing a focus on Grand Slam titles. “I was going strictly off of just Grand Slams, like where I would rank people in the GOAT [Greatest of all time] debate. So I would feel like it’d be disrespectful not to put him on next. He’s the next most winningest in Grand Slams.”
Sampras holds the fourth-highest number of Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis history with 14, trailing only Djokovic (24), Nadal (22), and Federer (20). His record stood for nearly a decade before being surpassed by Federer in 2009. The ongoing success of younger players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who have collectively won the last eight Grand Slams, raises the question of whether Sampras’s record will be challenged in the coming years. Currently, Alcaraz has six major titles and Sinner has four.
The debate over the “Mount Rushmore” of tennis highlights the different eras and playing styles that define the sport, and the difficulty in comparing players across generations. Officials stated they expect continued discussion as the current generation of stars continues to build their legacies.
