Located on Calle Mendizabal, just across from Plaza de Porlier, the Teatro Filarmónica stands as Oviedo’s second municipal theater, though its roots are deeply intertwined with the Sociedad Filarmónica, which maintains its headquarters and archives there.
Originally opened in 1944, the Filarmónica underwent significant renovations in 2004. The venue, boasting 800 seats across two levels, hosts a diverse range of performances, including theatrical productions and film screenings organized by the city council. Despite its relatively small stage, it accommodates a variety of events, from galas and award ceremonies to the annual Concurso y Muestra de Folclore Ciudad de Oviedo folk festival and concerts presented by the Sociedad Filarmónica. This makes the Filarmónica a key cultural hub in the region.
Adjacent to the theater itself, managed by the Fundación Municipal de Cultura (FMC), are offices and rehearsal spaces for the Fundación Musical Ciudad de Oviedo and its orchestra, Oviedo Filarmonía – the city’s symphony orchestra. The Sociedad Ovetense de Festejos (SOF) and the choirs of the Fundación Princesa de Asturias (FPA) also call these facilities home.
A plaque facing the Filarmónica, on the corner of Porlier, commemorates the site as the former Jewish quarter of Oviedo.
