Amsterdam – Dutch transmission system operator TenneT is significantly accelerating its grid expansion plans to accommodate the growing demand for renewable energy, announcing investments in large-scale offshore substations and upgrades to its terrestrial infrastructure. The moves come as European nations race to bolster energy security and meet ambitious climate goals.
The company plans to construct offshore substations, described by TenneT CEO Manon as being “as big as football stadiums,” this year to facilitate the connection of new wind farms to the grid. These substations will play a crucial role in aggregating and transmitting the increasing volumes of electricity generated offshore, according to company statements.
Beyond offshore developments, TenneT is also taking measures to expedite the expansion of its land-based grid. This includes deploying heavier-duty cables to increase transmission capacity and streamlining the process for connecting new consumers to the network. Four projects in the Limburg province are set to receive faster grid connections, enhancing regional energy access.
