Tennis Players Face Alarming Threats
Multiple professional tennis players have recently been subjected to disturbing threats, including death threats and intimidation tactics, linked to gambling interests. The incidents, reported across several European news outlets, highlight a growing concern over match-fixing and the pressure placed on athletes.
Belgian tennis player Michaël Geerts was reportedly threatened with harm to himself and his family if he did not comply with demands to lose a match. According to reports, Geerts received messages including a photograph of a pistol and details about his father’s identity and address. One message reportedly stated, “Win and you will have no hands left.”
Similar threats were reported involving an Italian tennis player, who also received a photograph of a weapon via WhatsApp, along with threats against their family, in an attempt to influence the outcome of a match. The player was told, “Lose or your father will die.”
These incidents underscore the increasing involvement of organized crime in professional tennis and the lengths to which individuals will travel to manipulate results for financial gain. Authorities are investigating the matter, but the reports serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by athletes in a world where sports betting is prevalent. The incidents raise serious questions about player safety and the integrity of the sport.
