Pop superstar Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence in California. The 44-year-old singer was taken into custody in Ventura County and later released, authorities confirmed. The incident marks a new chapter in the life of the artist, who has been a fixture in pop culture for decades.
According to reports, Spears was stopped by the California Highway Patrol around 9:00 p.m. While driving a black BMW 430i on Westlake Boulevard. Officers reported that the vehicle had been driving erratically at a high speed on Highway 101 near Thousand Oaks. She was taken into custody several hours later, around 3:00 a.m., and booked into the Ventura County jail.
Spears was released around 6:00 a.m. On a “cite and release” basis, and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, People magazine reported. Following her release, Spears was taken to a hospital for a blood alcohol content test.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” Britney’s manager, Cade Hudson, told TMZ. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.” Hudson added that Spears’ loved ones are “going to come up with a necessary and mapped-out plan to prepare her for success and wellness.”
This is not the first time Spears has faced legal issues. In 2007, she faced four misdemeanor charges and potential jail time after colliding with a parked car and leaving the scene in Los Angeles. Those charges were ultimately dropped after Spears paid the vehicle owner for damages.
Spears first stepped onto a stage at age 10, competing on the talent show Star Search in 1992. She signed with Jive Records in 1997, releasing her debut album, …Baby One More Time, which launched her to international stardom. Her relationship with Justin Timberlake captivated the public before their unexpected split.
Spears continued to work, but experienced a highly publicized personal crisis in 2007. Images of her shaving her head at a Los Angeles hair salon were widely circulated, marking a turning point in her public image. The incident highlighted the pressures of fame and the scrutiny she faced.
From 2008 to 2021, Spears was under a conservatorship overseen by her father, Jamie Spears, which gave him control over her finances, medical decisions, and personal and professional affairs. Spears publicly questioned the arrangement, alleging abuse. She testified that her father forced her to perform on the 2018 Piece of Me tour and her Las Vegas residency.
After a lengthy legal battle and pressure from the #FreeBritney movement, a Los Angeles court terminated the conservatorship in November 2021, restoring full control of her life and estate to the artist.
In October 2023, Spears released her memoir, The Woman In Me, detailing her experiences. In the book, she revealed that her father had allegedly drugged her with lithium when she didn’t cooperate during rehearsals, forced her into rehab, and threatened to withhold access to her children if she didn’t comply. She also claimed she was required to take birth control and prohibited from marrying or having another child.
Spears also addressed the attention surrounding her often provocative posts on Instagram, where she frequently shares photos of herself in revealing outfits and images of her home. “I know a lot of people don’t understand why I love making photos of myself naked or in new dresses. But I believe, if they had been photographed by other people thousands of times, exhibited for other people’s approval, they would understand that it gives me a lot of joy to pose when I feel sexy and take my own photos,” she wrote in the memoir.
