A 65-year-old Thai woman was discovered alive inside her coffin just moments before her scheduled cremation, in an astonishing incident that highlights the challenges of accurately determining death in remote areas. The extraordinary event unfolded on Sunday, October 22nd, in Phitsanulok province, northern Thailand.
Chonthirot, who had been suffering from an illness and bedridden for the past two years, was initially believed to have passed away at her home around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Following the determination of her apparent death, her family began preparations for a funeral service.
The coffin was transported for approximately four hours to a local temple that provides free cremation and funeral services to those in need. It was there, as a temple worker prepared to move the coffin from a truck, that the unbelievable occurred.
“I was getting ready to take the coffin out of the truck when I heard tapping and a voice coming from inside,” said Thammanoon, the temple employee who made the discovery, according to local media reports. “I lifted the cloth that covered her and froze when I saw that she was still moving. She was conscious, breathing weakly, and shaking her head, but couldn’t speak. I was stunned because I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”
An ambulance was immediately called, and Chonthirot was rushed to a hospital, where the temple has pledged to cover her medical expenses. The incident raises questions about medical assessment protocols in rural communities.
Chonthirot’s younger brother, Mongkol, 57, expressed his shock and relief. “I was shocked and happy that my sister was still alive. I almost fainted from surprise. It’s a miracle that she woke up,” he said.
