Amid a surge in global cyberattacks, the French government is taking a proactive step to strengthen its cybersecurity defenses through a novel competitive challenge. Dubbed “Vendettas,” the programme, launched February 29, 2024, by the ANSSI in partnership with École Polytechnique and other key players, offers a hands-on training ground for professionals and students to hone their skills against realistic threats. The competition focuses specifically on vulnerabilities within the Go programming language, a rising force in modern software progress, and aims to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the cybersecurity community.

Vendettas: A New Challenge in Cybersecurity

A new cybersecurity challenge, dubbed “Vendettas,” has been launched by the French cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, in collaboration with several partners, including the École Polytechnique. The competition, which began on February 29, 2024, aims to bolster defenses against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

The challenge focuses on a specific vulnerability related to the Go programming language and its use in network services. According to the challenge description, participants are tasked with exploiting a flaw in a custom-built application written in Go. This application simulates a real-world network service, providing a practical learning environment for cybersecurity professionals and students.

“Vendettas” is designed to be accessible to a wide range of skill levels, from beginners to experienced penetration testers. The competition features multiple stages, each presenting a different level of difficulty. Participants earn points by successfully exploiting vulnerabilities and submitting valid proofs of concept.

The initiative comes as organizations worldwide face a growing threat from cyberattacks, particularly those targeting critical infrastructure and sensitive data. The increasing reliance on software and interconnected systems necessitates a constant evolution of cybersecurity skills and techniques.

ANSSI has partnered with several organizations to deliver the challenge, including the École Polytechnique, the French National Cybersecurity Research Agency (ANSSI-CERT), and the cybersecurity company, Quarkslab. The collaboration underscores the importance of a coordinated approach to cybersecurity.

Participants can register and access the challenge platform through the XVets website. The competition is scheduled to run until May 3, 2024, providing ample time for individuals and teams to hone their skills and compete for recognition. The challenge’s structure encourages collaborative problem-solving and knowledge sharing within the cybersecurity community.

“Vendettas” is not just a competition; it’s a practical training exercise designed to improve the overall cybersecurity posture of participants and the broader ecosystem. The focus on Go, a language gaining popularity in cloud-native applications, highlights the need to address vulnerabilities in modern software development practices.
