Rio de Janeiro Police Operation Leaves Over 130 Dead in Favelas

A massive police operation in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has resulted in at least 132 confirmed fatalities, including four police officers, marking the deadliest single police action in the city’s history.

The operation, launched early yesterday morning, targeted the Alemão and Penha favelas, with a force of approximately 2,500 officers confronting members of the Red Command drug faction. Eyewitnesses described a scene of widespread carnage, with dozens of bodies discovered along the main streets of Vila Cruzeiro and in nearby forested areas. Erivelton Vidal Correia, head of the local residents’ association, stated, “I’ve brought 53 down myself … there must be another 12 or 15 up there in the bush,” adding, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life, brother – not even in the Gaza Strip does this happen.”

The scale of the violence has sparked outrage and accusations of summary executions, with residents claiming police did not attempt to detain individuals before resorting to lethal force. Cida Santana recounted her son Fabio’s message that he was attempting to surrender when shot, and later discovered his body with what appeared to be knife wounds. “Irrespective of whether these people were involved in the local drug trade or not, we don’t have the death penalty in Brazil … They should have been arrested,” said favela activist Raull Santiago. This incident raises serious questions about police conduct and human rights within Brazil’s favelas, areas long plagued by gang violence and police brutality – a situation detailed in reports from Human Rights Watch.

Rio de Janeiro Governor Cláudio Castro defended the operation as “a harsh blow” to heavily-armed drug traffickers, stating, “The only victims yesterday were the police.” However, the UN’s human rights office has expressed horror at the killings and called for a thorough investigation. The events are likely to intensify scrutiny of Brazil’s security policies ahead of next month’s Cop climate summit in Belém. Further details on the ongoing investigation can be found here.

Authorities have stated that investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding each death and to ensure accountability.
