Tyrolean health officials and representatives from the Austrian Federal Chamber of Pharmacists met this week to discuss bolstering healthcare access and supply chain resilience across the region. The collaborative effort signals a commitment to strengthening preventative care programs, including the popular “lung at the Center” campaign which recently extended its reach due to high public demand.
Tyrolean health officials recently met with representatives from the Austrian Federal Chamber of Pharmacists to discuss the vital role pharmacies play in local healthcare access, supply chain stability, and the increasing integration of digital technologies.
TIROL – The meeting, held at the Landhaus, underscored the commitment of both the Tyrolean government and pharmacy leaders to strengthening healthcare services within the region. “A constructive dialogue with the pharmacy sector is very important to me,” said Tyrolean health official Cornelia Hagele. “We share the goal of further developing Tyrolean healthcare and strengthening the role of pharmacies as a key point of access to care.”
Ulrike Mursch-Edlmayr, President of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Pharmacists, echoed Hagele’s sentiment, highlighting the close working relationship between the two entities. “Pharmacies are often the first point of contact in the healthcare system – across Austria, we handle up to 600,000 personal consultations every day,” Mursch-Edlmayr stated. “We also work closely with the state of Tyrol in the area of prevention, ensuring both supply security and a comprehensive preventative care program.”
Focus on Prevention: “Lung at the Center”
A current initiative led by the Tyrolean Chamber of Pharmacists, the “Lung at the Center” campaign, demonstrates the value of professional advice offered in pharmacies. The program focuses on proper inhaler technique, a critical component of respiratory therapy. “We’ve seen how much patients benefit from clear guidance on the correct use of inhalers,” Hagele explained. “This improves therapies, strengthens prevention, and increases quality of life.”
The campaign, implemented in partnership with REHAmed-tirol and the University of Innsbruck, provides instruction on proper inhaler use at pharmacies throughout Tyrol. Due to significant public interest, the initiative has been extended through the end of next week.
Extensive Pharmacy Network in Tyrol
The discussion also highlighted the broad scope of responsibilities held by the Chamber of Pharmacists, which represents approximately 600 pharmacists working in 131 public pharmacies and one hospital pharmacy across Tyrol. The Chamber serves as a central advocacy group, supporting its members through pharmaceutical expertise, continuing education, and advisory services. It also participates in legal proceedings, quality control measures, and professional ethics oversight.
On a national level, the Austrian Federal Chamber of Pharmacists oversees additional regulatory functions, including pharmacist education, licensing, and the transfer of pharmacy concessions.
Commitment to Strengthened Collaboration
During the meeting, Mursch-Edlmayr, Tyrolean Chamber President Matthias König-Mitterhauser, and other representatives emphasized the importance of continued collaboration for the future. “Pharmacies are our primary care providers – and we want to further strengthen that position,” they stated.
Hagele concluded by reinforcing the value of the partnership. “The Chamber of Pharmacists is a strong partner for modern, patient-centered care in Tyrol.”
