A 12-year-old boy in China has been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer after surviving on a diet of junk food and sugary drinks instead of regular meals, according to medical reports.
The child, identified only as A, lives in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, and had been living mostly with his grandparents. His diet consisted primarily of fried chicken, snacks, instant noodles, and frequent consumption of carbonated beverages and milk tea. He reportedly drank very little water.
His family initially dismissed his symptoms—abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss—as a simple stomach bug. However, when bloody stool appeared and his condition worsened, they rushed him to the hospital.
By the time he was examined, the boy was too weak to stand on his own, appeared pale and severely underweight. Medical tests revealed that the cancer had already spread throughout his abdomen and a significant amount of fluid had accumulated in his peritoneal cavity, indicating advanced-stage disease.
His treating physician stated directly that the boy’s long-term eating habits were the cause of the illness. “The sugar in drinks and carcinogenic substances in processed foods disrupted his gut bacteria and damaged the intestinal lining,” the doctor explained. “Children’s digestive systems are more sensitive than adults’, making them especially vulnerable to this kind of harm.”
The case highlights a growing trend of rising colon cancer rates among young people, which health experts increasingly link to shifts toward ultra-processed, low-fiber diets high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
