Former basketball star and current FK “Kauno Žalgiris” president Mantas Kalnietis is preparing to take on a major physical challenge: running the full Kauno Akropolis Marathon on April 26, 2026.
Kalnietis announced his goal during a press conference, stating he aims to complete the 42.195-kilometer race after a long break from competitive physical activity. He said he has been actively training in recent months and is motivated by the adrenaline and personal test the marathon presents.
“I haven’t felt this kind of physical challenge in a long time,” Kalnietis said. “Now I finally acquire to test myself and witness if I can run the full distance.”
The marathon, now in its 14th year, will begin near the “Akropolis” shopping center in Kaunas. Organizers note that while the route has been slightly adjusted from previous years, both the full marathon and the accompanying “Hollister” half-marathon will follow a looped course, allowing runners to avoid repeating the same stretch multiple times.
Traffic restrictions will be in effect across parts of the city on race day. Vehicle access will be limited or fully closed on several streets, including Jonavos Street (evening section), Smetonos Alley, Stirnų Street, Vilkų Street, Kruonio Street and Pamiškės Street. Mickevičiaus Street will be completely closed to traffic, and access to Karaliaus Mindaugo Prospect will be restricted during specific morning and afternoon windows.
Public transit routes will also be adjusted, with buses rerouted via Vaidoto Street instead of the usual Smetonos Alley path. Organizers advise residents and visitors to plan accordingly.
Kalnietis’s participation adds a high-profile element to the event, drawing attention not only to athletic endurance but also to the broader health benefits of sustained physical activity. His attempt underscores how setting ambitious fitness goals—even after years away from intense training—can inspire others to pursue their own wellness journeys.
The race will be streamed live, with results and updates available through Delfi Sportas.
