A prop used in the Turkish television series “Tozkoparan İskender,” initially presented as a historical artifact known as a “menzil taşı” or milestone, has been identified as a modern fabrication. The item was officially registered as a historical artifact on February 26, 2025, by the Istanbul 5th Regional Conservation Council and subsequently transferred to the Istanbul Museum of Islamic Arts, according to a report that sparked a debate among researchers.

WOOD MISTAKEN FOR STONE

The initial assessment, detailed in a published article, claimed the “menzil taşı” – found leaning against a tree in the Tuzla district of Istanbul – originated from the set of “Tozkoparan İskender.” Researchers stated the prop was constructed from wood, supported by bricks and stones, and had been registered and placed under protection at the museum.

Yet, Dr. Şükrü Seçkin Anık of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University challenged these findings in a subsequent article within the same publication. Anık revealed that the object was, in fact, a prop created in 2019 by the series’ art department, and that he was responsible for the Ottoman-era inscriptions on it. He emphasized that authentic Ottoman-era milestones were traditionally made of marble, suggesting the wooden construction raises scientific questions about its classification as a historical artifact.
