Two TransJakarta bus drivers are in police custody following a collision on an elevated busway in South Jakarta on Monday, February 23, 2026. The incident, which left two dozen passengers injured, is under investigation, and the drivers could face up to a year in prison if charged.

According to a statement from Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, spokesperson for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, the drivers have been detained at the Pancoran Subdit Gakkum for questioning. “For two people, the drivers have been secured at Subdit Gakkum Pancoran,” Hermanto said Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

Police are considering charges under Article 310, Paragraph 2 of Indonesia’s Traffic and Road Transportation Law, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail. The potential charge stems from allegations of negligence leading to the accident and resulting in minor injuries.

“The suspect could be charged under Article 310 Paragraph 2 of the Traffic and Road Transportation Law because of negligence causing an accident and resulting in minor injuries, with a threat of one year in prison,” Hermanto stated.

Authorities indicated the potential charge could apply to the driver, identified only by the initial Y, who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. Police are continuing their investigation and gathering evidence.

“That’s right. The process of examination is still ongoing,” Hermanto said when asked about the possibility of charges being filed against driver Y.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. On Monday, February 23, 2026, on the elevated busway in Cipulir, Kebayoran Lama. According to AKBP Ojo Ruslani, head of the Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Subdirectorate of Law Enforcement, the incident involved a TransJakarta Bianglala bus driven by Y, traveling from Kebayoran toward Cipulir, and a Mayasari Bakti bus driven by A, heading in the opposite direction.

Preliminary investigations revealed that driver Y admitted to falling asleep, causing the bus to swerve into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with the other bus. “Y admitted to falling asleep while driving, causing his vehicle to enter the opposite lane, resulting in a head-on collision,” Ruslani explained.
