Kerala Rain Alert: Heavy Showers & Fishermen Warning Until Feb 27

Rain is expected to continue across the state, with alerts issued for several districts over the next three days. The India Meteorological Department has warned of potential downpours and strong winds, prompting a green alert for various regions. The central and southern districts are forecast to experience the heaviest rainfall.

A low-pressure area currently lies over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and is expected to move northeast, gradually weakening over the next 24 hours. A cyclonic circulation is situated over the southeastern Arabian Sea, near the southern Kerala coast. According to the meteorological department, these conditions could bring scattered light to moderate rainfall with the possibility of thunderstorms to Kerala through February 27.

Strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, gusting to 60 kilometers per hour in some places, and rough seas are likely over the northern parts of the southwestern Bay of Bengal, the adjoining southern Bay of Bengal, and the central Bay of Bengal.

On February 24, 2026, similar conditions are expected over the northern parts of the southeastern Bay of Bengal, the adjoining southwestern Bay of Bengal, and the central eastern Bay of Bengal.

Fishing is not advised in these areas on the aforementioned dates.

Lightning Safety Guidelines

Lightning is dangerous and can cause significant damage to life, animals, and electrical and communication systems, as well as electrical appliances connected to conductive materials. The public should take the following precautions from the moment storm clouds are sighted. Do not rely on the absence of visible lightning as a reason to forgo these precautions.

– As soon as the first signs of lightning are observed, immediately move to a safe building. Remaining in open spaces increases the risk of being struck by lightning.

– Close windows and doors during periods of strong winds and lightning. Avoid standing near doors and windows. Remain inside the building and try to avoid touching walls or the floor.

– Disconnect the power supply to household appliances. Avoid proximity to electrical equipment during thunderstorms.

– Avoid using telephones during thunderstorms. Using a mobile phone is acceptable.

– Avoid playing in open spaces or on terraces, including children, when the atmosphere is overcast.

– Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms. Do not park vehicles under trees.

– Remain inside the vehicle during thunderstorms. Do not extend limbs outside the vehicle. You will be safer inside the vehicle.

Avoid traveling in bicycles, motorcycles, or tractors during thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe building until the lightning subsides.

– Do not go to the terrace or courtyard to collect laundry when there is lightning.

– Secure objects that are likely to fall in the wind.

– Avoid bathing during thunderstorms. Also, avoid collecting water from taps, as electricity from lightning may travel through the pipes.

– Do not go into the water to fish or swim when there is lightning. As soon as storm clouds are sighted, stop fishing, boating, and other activities and try to reach the shore immediately. Do not stand on the deck of a boat during thunderstorms. Casting and netting should be stopped during thunderstorms.
