A large tree collapsed onto a vehicle in the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru, on Wednesday night, injuring two people but miraculously sparing their lives. The incident occurred at the intersection of Madrid Street and Aviation Avenue.
Firefighters responded to the emergency at 11:16 p.m. on December 17, dispatching six units to the scene, according to the fire department’s website.
Rescuers extracted the injured occupants from the heavily damaged vehicle and transported them to a local hospital, said Brigadier Luis Otiura, head of the 4th Brigade of the Lima South Regional Command.
“The tree fell on the vehicle while it was passing by, due to the humidity and the age of the tree,” Otiura explained. “Unfortunately, the tree came down directly on top of the vehicle, with branches piercing the windshield.”
Occupants Avoided Fatal Injuries
Otiura confirmed that the vehicle’s occupants sustained injuries but were fortunate to avoid more serious harm. “They are stable, with minor injuries,” he said.
As of Thursday, December 18, traffic on Aviation Avenue near block 5 remains blocked, and drivers are advised to avoid the area.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the tree’s collapse, a situation that could have easily resulted in fatalities. The incident underscores the potential dangers posed by aging infrastructure and weather conditions.
