Saints put WR Ja’Lynn Polk on reserve/retired list

At just 24 years old, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk has chosen to step away from professional football. The New Orleans Saints placed Polk on the reserve/retired list on Sunday, bringing a sudden halt to a career that began with high expectations when the New England Patriots selected him in the second round of the 2024 draft at No. 37 overall. Drafted alongside quarterback Drake Maye with the explicit intent of anchoring the franchise's passing attack, Polk struggled to find his footing during his rookie campaign. He logged only 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns while appearing on less than half of the team's offensive snaps. His usage steadily declined as the season progressed, culminating in diminished playing time during his final eight games.

Following a coaching change, Polk returned for his sophomore campaign intending to reset his trajectory, but his momentum was cut short by a severe shoulder injury sustained during an August 2025 preseason game while fighting for extra yardage. That physical setback marked his final appearance in a Patriots uniform. Seeking a fresh start, New Orleans traded a 2027 sixth-round draft choice in September to acquire Polk and a 2028 seventh-rounder, hoping a change of scenery would help him rehabilitate and rediscover his form. Polk participated in the club's voluntary offseason program earlier in the spring and reported to training camp last week.

However, his tenure with the Saints stalled before it could truly begin. Coach Kellen Moore noted that Polk missed practice sessions on Friday and Sunday due to unspecified personal matters before the decision was made to place him on the retired list. Polk's abrupt departure adds his name to a troubling line of high-draft-capital wide receiver misses for New England, joining prior selections like N’Keal Harry, Tyquan Thornton, and Javon Baker.

For the Saints, the retirement alters the composition of their wide receiver room, though the franchise absorbs the loss from a position of relative strength. New Orleans enters the upcoming season boasting a deep pass-catching corps that features newly paid star Chris Olave, Devaughn Vele, and Mason Tipson, alongside a trio of drafted rookies in Jordyn Tyson, Bryce Lance, and Barion Brown. While these players support quarterback Tyler Shough in shaping the team's offensive future, Polk leaves the game behind to navigate a path away from the gridiron.
