Actor george Clooney and his wife, Amal, have reportedly obtained French citizenship, a decision that has prompted a reaction from former U.S. President Donald Trump. The couple’s move to raise thier family away from the intense scrutiny of Hollywood has ignited a political back-and-forth, with Trump linking the Clooneys’ new citizenship to his concerns about crime and immigration in France and the United States. The exchange highlights the ongoing, and often contentious, relationship between the actor and the former President.

George Clooney and his wife, Amal, have reportedly become citizens of France, a move that has drawn comment from former U.S. President Donald Trump. The couple is seeking to raise their children outside of the spotlight of Hollywood.

Trump addressed the news on Wednesday, linking Clooney’s new citizenship to concerns about crime in France and, by extension, the United States. “Good news! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political predictors I have ever seen, have officially become citizens of France, which, unfortunately, has a tremendous crime problem because of their terrible handling of immigration, much like we had with Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

This is not the first time Trump has publicly criticized Clooney. He has previously dismissed the actor as a “second-rate actor” and accused him of speaking negatively about him behind his back.

“Go to Hell”

Clooney, meanwhile, has recently been vocal about his belief that major media companies, CBS and ABC, should tell Donald Trump to “go fuck yourself” rather than reaching out-of-court settlements in defamation lawsuits. Trump had filed suits against the networks, alleging unfair treatment from “left-leaning media.” The development highlights the ongoing tensions between Trump and the press.

Clooney argued that freedom of the press in the U.S. is being eroded by CBS and ABC’s decision to avoid court battles. “If CBS and ABC had challenged these lawsuits and said ‘Go to hell,’ we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Clooney told Variety.

A longtime Democrat, Clooney was among those who praised Joe Biden when he secured the Democratic nomination for president. This support has, in turn, made him a target of criticism from Trump.

Clooney told Variety that he had a friendly relationship with Trump in the past.

Former Friends

“I knew him very well. He used to call me a lot. Once he tried to get me into a hospital and get a doctor for my back. I used to see him out at clubs and restaurants. He was a big, fun guy. He was. It’s changed,” Clooney said.

Since then, Clooney has become a vocal critic of Trump, believing he is damaging the United States. During a press conference in London in 2021, following Trump’s defeat in the presidential election, Clooney stated that the U.S. was still recovering from the damage caused by the former president, describing the current political climate as “…tough times. It can be very depressing.”

Clooney has previously stated that everyone is worried about the consequences of speaking out against Trump, but that he will not stop voicing his opinions because of it.

“If you spend your life worrying about things, you’re not going to get anything done. I want to be able to look my children in the eye and say where we stood and what we did at certain times in history.”
