Reports emerging from Washington D.C. indicate former President Donald Trump appeared to struggle with fatigue during a cabinet meeting Tuesday, raising fresh scrutiny of his stamina as he actively campaigns for a return to the White House. The incident, occurring just after noon at the White House, prompted a defense from Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who characterized the meeting as a productive three-hour session. This follows recent reports questioning the 79-year-old’s pace and energy levels, which Trump himself addressed at the start of the meeting, asserting he remains “sharper than ever.”
Former President Donald Trump appeared to struggle to stay awake during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, December 2, according to reports. The incident raises questions about the stamina of the 79-year-old as he seeks a return to office.
The cabinet meeting, as reported by CNN on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, began shortly after noon on Tuesday, with Trump and his cabinet members in attendance.
At the start of the meeting, Trump asserted he was “sharper than I was 25 years ago,” while responding to a recent New York Times (NYT) article that detailed observations of a perceived slowing of pace during his second term.

“Trump is sharp, but they aren’t,” Trump said, referring to the NYT.
Trump also criticized reporters for what he characterized as unfair coverage of his health and energy levels, directing a pointed message to the press: “You people are crazy.”
However, over the course of the next hour and a half, the former president appeared to have difficulty remaining alert. Multiple times during the cabinet meeting, which typically features praise directed toward Trump, he was observed nodding off.
Approximately 15 minutes after dismissing the NYT article, Trump reportedly struggled to keep his eyes open as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick lauded Trump’s trade policies, stating, “The greatest cabinet for the greatest president ever.”
Trump’s eyelids appeared to droop as Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner and Agriculture Secretary Brooker Rolins presented their reports. The struggle to stay awake became more pronounced as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin spoke.
As Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. addressed the room, Trump reportedly remained silent with his eyes closed for periods of 10 to 15 seconds, before briefly moving his eyes or nodding.
Just before 1:45 PM local time, Trump was still visibly fighting sleepiness as Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised his efforts to end ongoing conflicts. This time, the former president’s drowsiness was more noticeable as he sat directly beside Rubio, and the camera focused on both of them.
Responding to the reports, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump, stating that he “was listening intently and leading a marathon three-hour cabinet meeting.”
