Former President Donald Trump has launched a sweeping effort to invalidate actions taken by the Biden administration, alleging they were signed using an automated device rather than by President Biden personally. The challenge, announced this week, centers on the use of an autopen – a machine commonly employed to mechanically reproduce signatures – and fuels ongoing Republican claims about Biden’s cognitive abilities. legal scholars widely dispute the claim that use of such a device impacts the validity of presidential actions, but the move underscores escalating political tensions and a deepening distrust of the current administration among Trump and his allies.

Republicans have alleged the former president is a puppet of the “deep state.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again sought to discredit his successor, Joe Biden, by attempting to invalidate a series of administrative actions and executive orders issued by the current administration. The move comes as Trump claims Biden’s decisions are illegitimate, alleging they were signed using an automated pen rather than his own hand.

“All documents, proclamations, executive orders, memorandums, or agreements signed through the forbidden automatic pen by former resident Joseph R. Biden, Jr., are hereby declared invalid and void. All those who received ‘pardons’ or other legal instruments signed in this manner are notified that the aforementioned documents are fully and finally terminated and have no legal effect. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump stated.

An automatic pen, also known as an autopen, is a device used to mechanically reproduce a person’s signature, typically for ceremonial documents or those requiring a high volume of signatures. It is commonly used in administrative settings, both public and private, to assist high-ranking officials who are unable to physically sign large quantities of paperwork.

Trump and his allies insist that Biden’s decisions were not made by him personally, but by unelected members of his administration who allegedly exploited his diminished cognitive health to manipulate presidential power for their own gain. They have gone so far as to portray the former president as a puppet, with the “deep state” effectively running the United States in his name. This latest challenge to Biden’s authority underscores the deep political divisions within the U.S.

“Biden’s term is one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. The former president’s inner circle attempted to mislead the public, conceal his condition, and take unauthorized actions with the help of the automatic pen – actions that are now invalid,” declared Republican Congressman James Comer.

Prior to leaving office in January, Biden issued several pardons, including those for members of his family, including his son, Hunter. He justified the decision by stating he was attempting to protect them from politically motivated prosecutions. Legal experts in the United States are unanimous in their assessment that the Constitution does not require a president to personally sign pardons for them to be valid.

“Any president has the right to overturn any executive order of their predecessor, regardless of how it was signed. The issue of the automatic pen is irrelevant. Documents signed with it are valid,” stated Barbara McQuade, a law professor at the University of Michigan.
