A new trade agreement between Canada and China, announced last week, is triggering a strong response from former U.S. President Donald Trump. The deal aims to lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles while simultaneously reducing import taxes on Canadian agricultural products. Trump swiftly condemned the agreement Saturday, threatening a considerable 100% tariff on all Canadian imports should the deal be finalized, escalating concerns over potential trade friction between the three nations.

Canada recently negotiated a deal to lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for reduced taxes on Canadian agricultural products, a move that has drawn a sharp rebuke from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump warned Saturday that he would impose a 100% tariff on all imports from Canada to the United States if the trade agreement between the two countries is finalized. The announcement comes after Canada and China revealed the partnership last week.

The former president asserted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “is very wrong” if he believes Canada will become a “dumping ground” for Chinese goods destined for the U.S. market.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, there will be an immediate 100% tariff on all goods and products coming into the United States from Canada,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The agreement between Canada and China centers on reducing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in return for lower import taxes on Canadian agricultural exports.

Trump further stated Saturday that “China will take Canada over, completely devour it, including the destruction of its businesses, its social fabric, and its overall way of life.”

The escalating rhetoric highlights the potential for trade tensions between the U.S., Canada, and China, particularly as countries navigate shifting economic partnerships. The dispute underscores the complex dynamics of international trade and the influence of domestic politics on foreign policy decisions.
