UK’s Starmer Faces Scrutiny Over India Trade Talks and Stance on Russian Oil

British Labour Party leader Keir Starmer concluded a visit to India today, facing questions regarding his approach to a potential free trade agreement and his reluctance to publicly pressure New Delhi over its continued purchase of Russian oil.

Starmer’s trip comes after previous attempts to secure a trade deal with India were unsuccessful under former Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson. A deal is seen as crucial for the UK to diversify its trade relationships post-Brexit. The U.S., under President Trump’s renewed trade policies, has also been actively pursuing closer economic ties with India, particularly after imposing tariffs on New Delhi due to its ongoing oil trade with Moscow.

During a press conference with his Indian counterpart, Starmer offered limited responses when questioned about urging India to reduce its reliance on Russian energy sources. Aides later clarified that the issue of Russian oil was discussed, but no public commitment was obtained. This follows Starmer’s meeting last year with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he also avoided direct condemnation of actions in Hong Kong, citing economic opportunities. He previously stated the U.K. “mustn’t lose … the opportunity for our economy.”

The Labour leader’s cautious approach reflects a broader pattern of prioritizing economic pragmatism, even when it clashes with stated principles on international affairs. The UK is actively seeking to strengthen its global economic position following its departure from the European Union, as detailed by the Department for Business and Trade. Further discussions are expected as both nations navigate complex geopolitical considerations and trade negotiations.
