A widespread and unsettled weather system is impacting much of Turkey, bringing a mix of rain, thunderstorms, and snow, especially in southern regions. The Turkish Meteorological Directorate warns that these conditions will persist for several days, prompting cautions for potential disruptions to travel and daily life across a large swathe of the country. Residents are advised to stay informed of rapidly changing conditions and heed warnings for localized flooding, strong winds, and reduced visibility.

A widespread weather system is bringing rain, thunderstorms, and even snow to much of Turkey, with particularly heavy downpours expected in the south. The Turkish Meteorological Directorate forecasts that the unsettled conditions will persist for several days, potentially causing disruptions to travel and daily life.

The affected regions include the south and east of the Marmara region, the Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, the western Black Sea, the interior of the Central and Eastern Black Sea regions, and most of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia (excluding Van and Mardin). Rainfall is expected to be heaviest along the coasts of Mersin, Adana, and Hatay, where localized flooding is possible.

Inland and eastern areas will also experience fog and mist, particularly during the morning and evening hours, reducing visibility. Higher elevations in eastern Anatolia and the interior of the Eastern Black Sea region could see a mix of rain and snow, with accumulations at the highest peaks.

Temperatures are expected to remain near seasonal averages across the country. Winds will generally be light from the south, but will become stronger – reaching 40-60 km/h (25-37 mph) – in the interior of the Central Black Sea region.

Warnings in Effect

Authorities have issued warnings for heavy rainfall in Mersin, Adana, and along the coast of Hatay, urging residents to be cautious of potential disruptions to transportation, flash floods, lightning strikes, and localized hail. A strong wind warning is also in effect for the interior of the Central Black Sea region, with gusts expected to reach potentially damaging levels.

Meteorologist Orhan Åžen warned that temperatures are dropping across the country as December begins, with the eastern regions experiencing a greater temperature decrease. This cooling trend will likely bring a mix of rain and snow to eastern Anatolia. He also cautioned that rainfall in the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal areas could become severe later in the weekend.

Istanbul is currently experiencing rain, which is expected to continue through Monday, with temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). İzmir is also rainy, with a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit). In Ankara, rain is forecast for the next three days, with temperatures dropping to 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit).
